Job Opening: Lead Concept Artist (Apex Legends)

Location: Los Angeles, CA, USA & Vancouver, BC, Canada

Type: Full-Time

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Apex Legends team and our Ex Dev Art Directors to drive the external production and designs of character/weapon concepts and graphical elements (badges, holosprays, banner frames) and additional content that leverages strong graphic design dexterity
  • Manage and support the concept team to make sure they get properly tasked and have balance in their workload while prioritizing the concept team’s wellbeing. This includes overseeing their own concepts, and helping them stay on schedule.
  • Work closely with Leads and Directors to keep quality and style consistent across all assets
  • Have extensive knowledge of the latest game development tools, techniques, and workflows (including internal proprietary tools) and ability to share this with the team
  • As an individual contributor, be able to make concepts in the highest quality
  • Own the quality control of incoming graphical content and manage the feedback and approvals
  • Finalizing, polishing, externally created concept content as needed to ensure visual quality bar is met or exceeded and 3D modelers are well informed
  • Assist the OS ADs in internal OS training, as well as defining and documenting OS best practices and style guides
  • Coordinate with Ex Dev Management team on addressing vendor gaps, quality issues, scheduling or changes in scope
  • Create and critique briefs and production packages for external production
  • Actively seek opportunities to improve processes and facilitates solutions at all levels in the organization

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Great capacity for managing the concept team in terms of art and building achievable and realistic schedules, according to the needs of the studio
  • Develop and maintain strong creative and collaborative partnerships across disciplines to help further develop Apex visual language
  • Strong understanding of proportion, scale, perspective, lighting, and color
  • Exceptional ability to design and illustrate everything from characters to environments to mechanical designs… or anything that could be imagined in a Respawn game
  • Basic understanding of 3D and experience creating designs to be translated into 3D
  • An experienced eye for artistic quality and detail with the ability to break and communicate complex feedback and art direction clearly using visual, verbal, and written medium
  • The patience, temperament, and thinking, and communicative adaptability required to help ensure constant alignment with external partners often separated by distance, language, and cultural aspects
  • Experience working with external service providers
  • The best people skills. Empathy for fixing the problems of others, whether internal Respawn or external partners, and respect for others’ time
  • 8+ years experience as a Concept Artist
