Job Opening: 2D Matte Painter & Background Artist
Location: Bristol, England, UK
Type: Full-Time, Remote
Responsibilities:
- To provide high-quality digital matte paintings for the 2D backgrounds from templates and references provided by series Leads, Art Director, and Layout team.
- To take creative briefs from the Director and Art Director and Lead Background Artists.
- To work with the Art Director, Lead Background Artist and CG Supervisor in finding creative and technical solutions in the use of digital matte paintings.
- To work alongside the digital look development team in finding creative solutions.
- Ensure continuity of style, lighting, and tone across all matte paintings and background artwork for the Series.
- To work with existing file structures/ pipeline assets and to make recommendations where efficiencies and improvements could be made.
- To collaborate with production in producing a schedule of asset stills/photogrammetry required for matte paintings.
- Working on designs for more than one episode at a time; revisions to be dealt with efficiently and effectively.
- Managing the creation of assets within the scheduled time allotted.
- To attend technical / process meetings where appropriate.
- To communicate schedule challenges where appropriate and where any issues impact delivery schedules.
- To archive all assets at the end of the delivery.
- To observe the provisions of the Health & Safety at Work Act.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Strong drawing skills and digital painting skills and ability to produce complex matte painted artwork to a high standard
- Strong knowledge of working with a Cintiq and Photoshop & Illustrator
- Working knowledge of Maya useful but not essential
- Knowledge of CG comp software and process useful eg Nuke or similar
- Knowledge of Autodesk Shotgun production tracking software useful but not essential
- Ability to design to different styles
- Excellent eye for perspective colors and lighting.
- Proactive and flexible team player
- Ability to take art direction
- Strong portfolio showing set and environment designs.
- Excellent time management and ability to produce completed artwork according to expectations and within schedule
- Previous CG/TV series experience essential
- Understanding of 3D pipeline a bonus and good technical knowledge of video formats and image resolutions
