Job Opening: Motion Capture (Mocap) Supervisor

Responsibilities:

  • Supervising Motion Capture (Mocap) Operations: As a Mocap Supervisor, you will oversee the entire motion capture process, ensuring the smooth operation of the Vicon camera system and Xsens motion capture suits. This includes setting up and calibrating the equipment, troubleshooting any technical issues, and ensuring the quality and accuracy of the captured data.
  • On-Set Coordination: You will collaborate closely with directors, cinematographers, VFX supervisors, and other production team members to understand the specific requirements for capturing motion in various scenes. You will coordinate with the camera operators, actors, and stunt performers to ensure proper placement and alignment of markers or sensors, and provide guidance to achieve the desired results.
  • Data Management and Processing: You will be responsible for managing and organizing the captured mocap data, including labeling and categorizing the data for easier retrieval and post-processing. Additionally, you will oversee the data transfer process, ensuring its seamless integration into the VFX pipeline and compatibility with Unreal Engine or other relevant software.
  • Quality Control and Troubleshooting: As the Mocap Supervisor, you will monitor the quality of the captured data in real-time, ensuring that the movements are accurately tracked and recorded. You will troubleshoot any technical issues that may arise during the mocap session, such as marker/sensor occlusion, equipment malfunctions, or data synchronization problems.
  • Team Management and Training: If applicable, you may be responsible for managing a team of mocap technicians or operators. This includes providing guidance, training, and supervision to ensure that the team operates efficiently and effectively during mocap sessions. You will also collaborate with other departments, such as VFX, animation, and rigging, to ensure smooth data integration and workflow.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Expertise in Motion Capture Systems: Extensive knowledge and experience with Vicon camera systems and Xsens motion capture suits, including their setup, calibration, operation, and troubleshooting.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong technical skills related to mocap hardware and software, data processing, and data management. Familiarity with Unreal Engine or other relevant software used in the VFX industry.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively coordinate with various stakeholders, including directors, cinematographers, actors, and technical teams. The ability to explain complex technical concepts in a clear and concise manner.
  • Problem-Solving and Adaptability: Strong problem-solving skills to troubleshoot technical issues that may arise during mocap sessions. The ability to adapt to changing requirements, tight deadlines, and unexpected challenges.
  • Attention to Detail: A meticulous approach to ensure accurate marker placement, data synchronization, and data quality control.
  • Leadership and Management: If managing a team, the ability to provide clear guidance, mentorship, and supervision to team members, ensuring efficient operation and effective collaboration.
