Job Opening: Character Surfacing Artist
Location: Montpellier, France
Type: Full-Time
Responsibilities:
- Creation of textures and materials for 3D characters, including skins, clothes, hair, etc. using texturing tools such as Substance Painter and Photoshop.
- Developing shaders in rendering engines like Arnold and Unreal Engine
- Collaborate with the modeling and animation departments to ensure that textures and shaders integrate well with the existing pipeline.
- Adjust and refine textures based on feedback from art directors and technical supervisors.
- Maintain visual quality while meeting deadlines and production constraints.
- Ensure the consistency of the visual style with the rest of the elements of the film (props, environment).
- Development of technical solutions based on the specific needs of the characters (skins, accessories, etc.).
- Testing and optimization to ensure assets work efficiently in the rendering engine being used.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Proficiency in surfacing tools: Substance Painter, and Adobe Photoshop.
- In-depth knowledge of shaders and rendering engines (Arnold, Unreal Engine)
- Understanding of advanced texturing techniques (UDIM, PBR, etc.).
- Ability to manage complex pipelines and adapt to the studio’s internal tools.
- Good artistic skills: Attention to detail, understanding of materials, colours, and lights.
- Experience in animated or cinematographic productions with stylized or realistic characters.
- Time management skills and ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Experience as a Surfacing Artist in the field of animation, cinema, or video games.
- Ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams: modeling, lighting, rigging.
- Artistic sensitivity and ability to interpret complex artistic directions.
- Knowledge of anatomy, character design, and digital sculpture (a plus).
- Team spirit, good communication, and organizational skills.
