Job Opening: Matte Painting Artist

Location: Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Canada

Type: Full-Time

Responsibilities:

  • Create the painted 2D/2.5D/3D backgrounds (hand painted, 3D or photo bash) and the 3D geometry elements necessary to create the environments, digital sets (and extensions), or scenes from the film, while working with the departments responsible for design, layout, modeling, environment, surfacing, as well as lighting and image composition.
  • Create skies, environments, extensions of digital sets, and accessories entirely painted by hand and by photo bash
  • Create simple and complex configurations in 2D, 2.5D, and 3D software
  • 3D modeling, UV unrolling, surfacing, lighting, rendering, image composition
  • Troubleshoot and use talents to create visually stunning backgrounds that blend with film style and 3D requirements, using direction given by the Matte Painting Supervisor, Art Director, and Production Designer.
  • Create documentation of new processes and methodologies
  • Self-learn new processes, software, and new ways of working
  • Communicate ideas, processes, and obstacles easily and effectively to other team members

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Degree in Arts or Animation, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 2 years of experience producing feature films, commercials, and/or video games
  • Traditional drawing/painting skills are required
  • Demonstrated ability to paint elements lighting and ambiance while coordinating styles
  • Strong painting, drawing, design, image composition, and color matching
  • Strong ability to learn independently
  • Strong curiosity/interest in art
  • Strong communication skills (English or French)
  • Ability to create “matte paintings” stylistically or realistically using 2D, 2.5D, and 3D applications
  • Advanced skills in using Photoshop, Maya, Blender, Houdini, Unreal, ZBrush, 3Dcoat, Mari, Nuke, Terragen, Sketchbook Pro, Procreate, and rendering software (Arnold Redshift. Cycles, Vray, etc.)
  • Knowledge of stereoscopic digital process
  • Experience with Python, an asset
  • Creation of Nuke gizmos, an asset
  • Experience in modeling/surfacing, an asset
